The New Zealand Animal Law Association is a coalition of lawyers, law students and law graduates working together to improve the welfare and lives of animals through the legal system in New Zealand.
We currently have over 500 members signed up throughout the country.
From Whangarei to Invercargill, we span across many practice areas of the law. Our members include lawyers working for large commercial firms, criminal and civil litigators, in-house counsel, lawyers working for government judiciary, and a Queens Counsel.

Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG Australia
The Honourable Michael Kirby AC CMG Australia was appointed to the High Court of Australia, the country’s most superior appellate court, in 1996 and when he retired in 2009, was Australia’s longest serving judge.
Armed with numerous honorary doctorates, a passion for social justice and with years of experience in senior roles at the UN, World Bank, and World Health Organisation (WHO), Mr has in recent years become a prominent advocate of animal welfare.
In 2010 he was awarded the prestigious Gruber Justice Prize and in 2013 he was appointed Chair of the UN Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights Violations in North Korea. He also serves as Editor-in-Chief of The Laws of Australia.
