Free Public Lecture Series on the Animal Welfare Act 1999 Reforms

NZALA will be hosting a free public lecture series by Marcelo Rodriguez Ferrere (pictured), lecturer of public law and animal law at the University of Otago. His talk will be on the topic 'A contextual assessment of the Animal Welfare Amendment Bill'.

Synopsis:

The Animal Welfare Amendment Bill 2013 is awaiting its second reading after the Primary Production Committee delivered their report on the Bill on 26 June 2014. In some respects, the Bill in its current form is an affirmation of New Zealand’s commitment to a progressive legislative regulation of animal welfare. In others, it is an upsetting confirmation that meaningful reform is in a period of stasis, and perhaps regression.

This presentation will examine both historical and contemporary approaches to regulation of animal welfare as part of a wider assessment of the Bill in its legislative context.
