Animal Law Conference on Saturday 1 July 2017

We are excited to announce that Dr Jane Goodall will be speaking at our Animal Law Conference on Saturday 1 July! Dr Goodall is widely regarded as one of the world's foremost experts on chimpanzees.

Her discovery in 1960 that chimpanzees make and use tools rocked the scientific world and redefined the relationship between humans and animals.

Dr. Goodall is a UN Messenger of Peace and Dame Commander of the British Empire. Jane will be speaking about her work around the world tackling animal welfare issues, including her work to combat the illegal wildlife trade.

The other speakers are:

  • The Honourable Michael Kirby AC CMG Australia, former judge of the High Court of Australia, speaking about problems with New Zealand's animal law regime and strategies for the future*

  • Marcelo Rodriguez Ferrere, Lecturer of Animal Law and Administrative Law at the University of Otago, speaking on animal sentience and the law

  • Natalie Walker, Crown Solicitor at Kayes Fletcher Walker, speaking on animal welfare prosecutions

  • Mike Bodie, Prosecutions Counsel, Department of Conservation (DoC), speaking on wildlife prosecutions

  • Danielle Duffield, New Zealand Animal Law Association President, speaking on the practical operation of the Animal Welfare Act 1999

  • Vernon Tava, Waitemata Local Board Member, speaking on animals and legal standingThe conference will take place from 10.00am – 4.30pm.

    The Association's AGM will also take place during the lunch hour. The venue is Kensington Swan, 18 Viaduct Harbour, Auckland. A light lunch will be provided.

    Registration fees are:

  • $45 – standard conference rate

  • $25 – NZALA members who have paid their membership fee

  • $15 – students (or $10 for NZALA student members who have paid their membership fee).
