Guest lecture by American legal scholar Steven Wise
New Zealand Animal Law Association hosts guest lecture by American legal scholar Steven Wise
Time: 6pm, Thursday 7 May 2015
Location: Northey lecture theatre, University of Auckland Law School, 9 Eden Crescent
Speaker: Steven Wise is the president of the Nonhuman Rights Project and has practiced animal protection law for 38 years. He has taught animal law at various law schools throughout the United States, including Harvard.
Synopsis: The fundamental legal categories are “person,” possessed of the capacity for legal rights, and “things,” which lack it. A legal wall separates humans, the natural legal “persons,” from the other animals, which remain “things.”
In this talk, American law professor Steven Wise will examine efforts to elevate the legal status of certain nonhuman animals through strategic litigation.
